Subcultures and Sociology is a Grinnell College pedagogical website created by Professor Ross Haenfler and constructed with the collaboration of Grinnell students. It is a teaching tool, an evolving digital project, and a scholarly resource on the sociology of various subcultures.
In learning about subcultures, we also learn from them something about the larger social world beyond any particular scene. Studying individuals and groups named "deviant" encourages us to question the social rules that we so often take for granted, rules that on reflection make little sense.
